Archaeology Notes

Site Management (29 November 2011)

Small building with slated roof, built almost entirely from fragments of tomb-stones, many of them elaborately carved. Level of Old churchyard was raised 6 feet in 1849 to accommodate victims of the cholera epidemic. (Historic Scotland)

Churchyard recently cleared of tombstones, re-erected against walls, central memorial to fishermen lost in 1881 disater. Rebuilt 1849.
