The prior of Coldingham Priory (NT96NW 119) established hunting quarters for the accommodation for himself and guests at Houndwood (NT 842 638).

A tower at Houndwood was demolished during 18th century improvements.

Original keep appears to have been an oblong structure with vaulted basement; turnpike stair inNE corner and another smaller stair in thicknessof wall in NW corner. Much modernised by the building of a new front with crowstep gables on Nside and other alterations.
