Archaeology Notes

NT82SW 99 from 8163 2426 to 8133 2402

Lying on the moderate to moderately steep W-facing slope of Cove Hill, there is an area of rig, measuring up to 300m from NW to SE by 200m, running obliquely across the hillside. Its lower limit bounds the E extreme of an area of rig (NT82SW 103) occupying the haughland to the E of the Bowmont Water except for a steep scarp towards the N end. Elsewhere, the rig is contained within the modern field-boundaries on the N and E, and by a collapsed field wall, now largely reduced to a low bank on the S. Generally the bank is spread up to 2m in width and stands up to 0.5m in height where best preserved. It is not depicted on the 1962 edition of the 1:10650 OS map and must have been removed before that time. Outwith these boundaries contour cultivation (NT82SW 100) spreads over the hillside to the E and S. The rig is associated with the improved field pattern and relatively late in the sequence of cultivation remains through the valley. In character, the rig is also very similar to the that on the valley floor to the W.
