(NT 8145 2127) Church (NR) (Site of)

(Centred NT 8145 2125) Old Grave Yard (NAT)

OS 6" map, Roxburghshire, (1923).

Within this graveyard there can be traced the foundations of a church, probably a late 12th century structure of nave and chancel, the respective overall dimensions of which can be given approximately as 48' NE-SW by 32', and 19' by 24'. This was the church of the parish of Mow, anciently 'Molle', granted to Kelso Abbey at some date before 1152. Mow was annexed to Morebattle in 1672.

In the graveyard is a table stone dated 1680, two others with illegible inscriptions, and several dated between 1720 and 1730.

RCAHMS 1956, visited 1937.

The foundations of this church are obscured beneath a thick growth of nettles, so that it is not possible to separate nave from chancel with any accuracy. It appears to have measured 22.0m NE-SW by 8.3m overall, between wall centres.

The burial ground is no longer in use. The tombstones are as described by the RCAHMS.
