Archaeology Notes

NT82SW 270 from 8200 2038 to 8220 2008

An area of straight, closely spaced, cross-contour rig, measuring 200m from NNE to SSW by up to 300m and largely contained within field-banks, has destroyed the NE quarter of an area of reverse S-shaped rig (NT82SW 58) on the gentle slopes above the haughland of the Bowmont Water and at the base of Wondrum Hill. The remains of a cairn (NT82SW 15) lie within the cultivation. The rig, which is barely discernible in places, measures 2.2m in width between furrows 0.8m in width and up to 0.1m in depth.

The field-banks, noted on the NE, SE and SSW sides of the rig form the lower half of a small isolated field-system. The upper field, measuring 190m from NW to SE by 115m, overlies the E half of the reverse S-shaped rig (NT82SW 58). Unlike the lower field, however, there is no sign of associated narrow rig within.
