Archaeology Notes

NT82SW 25.01 from 8160 2318 to 8169 2317

Vertical aerial photographs (RAF 106 G/Scot/UK 121 frames 4141-2: 20 June 1946) reveal faint traces of contour cultivation over a steep slope on the W side of Percy Law. The cultivation, which measures about 45m from N to S by 80m, is not discernible on the ground. From the aerial photographic evidence, it is bounded on the N and W by an unnamed tributary of the Bowmont Water and on the S and E by an extensive area of cross-contour rig (NT82SW 150) spreading over the surrounding moderate slope. It seems that evidence for the contour cultivation survives only where the slope was too steep for ploughing across the contour.

On the E along the upper limit of the cultivation, between NT 8169 2316 to NT 8169 2316, a bank-like feature, or a lynchet, separates the contour cultivation from the cross-contour cultivation above. The bank, or possible lynchet, measures 55m in length from N to S and 2.5m in width. It displays a slightly convex profile and may be similar to those observed within the extent of rig further uphill (NT82SW 139).
