Archaeology Notes

NT82SW 244 from 84181 21408 to 84183 21395

The slight remains of a earthen circular feature, situated about 25m ENE of the cairn (NT82SW 9) and the circular. stone-built sheepfold on the gentle top of Hairny Law, was observed on vertical aerial photographs (RAF 106 G/Scot/UK 121 frames 4254-5: 20 June 1946). This feature survives as a slight platform measuring 10m in diameter within a shallow depression 0.6m to 0.7m in width and up to 0.15m in depth. There is no obvious entrance. Given both the location and the similar dimensions to the sheepfold, the platform is probably the remnants of an earleir, turf-built, stell.
