Archaeology Notes

NT82SW 204 from 8125 2223 to 8129 2212

An area of contour cultivation, measuring 90m from N to S by 80m, occupies the moderate E-facing hillside to the E of, and downhill from, the settlement at Elliesheugh (NT82SW 23). The cultivation is bordered on the SE by a modern dyke and to the S by a vehicle track. The S and W extents have been extensively damaged by cattle trample. The cultivation curves N in the NW and towards the S in the SW corner. It averages about 5m in width between furrows, or breaks in slope standing up to 0.7m in height, particularly in the centre where it resembles terracing.
