Archaeology Notes

NT81NE 113 from 8575 1772 to 8585 1748

Vertical aerial photography (RAF 106 G/Scot/UK 121 frame 4352: 20 June 1946) records what may be further traces of contour cultivation over the W end and the SW side of the spur of Hayhope Knowe. Spread over steep slopes the cultivation traces are much narrower than observed over the NW-facing slopes (NT81NE 113). The cultivation which covers an area 200m from NNW to SSE by 100m, is defined on the S side by the Em Sike and on the W by a series of unnamed drainage channels. The upper extent is undefined. The cultivation was not observed on the ground and must remain doubtful.
