Limekilns, Dunbar Cement Works

Due for demolition in 1966 is a pair of kilns in the construction area of the Dunbar Cement Works. They project north west and north east respectively from a revetted ramp which serves both. Top of the NE kiln was open when visited. They are built of poorly coursed rubble and stand about 25ft high in front. The NW kiln is buttressed on theon the W. Each kiln has three arched vents, one in each free face, with barrel -vaults descending and narrowing to give access to small arched apertures at the inner ends. The arches stand about 14 feet high externaly, the voussoirs of the NW ones being of stone and of brick. The open top of the NE kiln is seen to be lined with small squared blocks, presumably firebricks.

A plan is understood to be in the keeping of the County Planning Authority.

Visited by RCAHMS (Angus Graham) 3 April 1966.
