Archaeology Notes

NT75SE 16 76 52

See also NT75SE 6.

Langton was licensed as a burgh of barony in 1509-10 but was removed in 1760 (see (M) 10), and its site was enclosed within the grounds of Langton House. It was a 'straggling town' which extended eastwards from the medieval parish church (NT75SE 6, at NT 7624 5253) and the now demolished Langton House (NT 7610 5260) to 'near the boundary towards Dunse'. It was burned in 1558 by Sir Henry Percy and Sir George Bowes, and attacked at other times by raiding parties from England.

RCAHMS 1980, visited 1979; Statistical Account (OSA) 1795; New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845; G S Pryde 1965.

An accurate site for Langton could not be ascertained. No trace could be found on aerial photographs.

Visited by OS (RD) 22 July 1980.
