Accessing Scotland's Past Project

The stables at Kames date from the eighteenth century, with later additions and alterations. Situated to the west of Kames House, many of the original details survive on this two-storeyed structure.

The stables are built on a U-plan, with a twentieth century addition. On the ground floor, timber carriage-doors survive, and there are modern garage doors at the rear. The building is covered with a coat of whitewashed harl with dressings of cream sandstone, and a raised string course divides the floors.

To the south-west of the stable block, there is a barn and hayloft which appear to date from the earlier part of the eighteenth century. This building may have served as the original stable block.
