Accessing Scotland's Past Project

An Iron Age bronze collar was found in the village of Stichill in 1743 during digging for a well. The decoration and style of the collar suggest that this artefact was made in the late first or early second century AD, in the West Midlands area of England.

As the artefact was found in near perfect condition its find-spot, near a spring, suggests that it may have been a ritual deposit. Watery places appear to have been important to Iron Age people; objects may have been placed near them as offerings to gods or ancestors.

Archaeology Notes

NT73NW 6 71 38.

A decorated, Iron Age, bronze collar was found in 1747 when digging for a well, about 7ft below the surface, at the E end of the village of Stichill (NT 71 38). It was donated to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) in 1782 by Sir James Pringle (Accession no: FA 37).

It may have been associated with the armlet or armlets described on NT73NW 7 (M Simpson 1968), and is probably of 2nd century AD date (J N G and A Ritchie 1972).
