(NT 7707 0857 - NT 7733 0856) Earthwork (NR)
OS 6" map, (1962).
This linear earthwork runs E-W across some flat, peaty ground S of the summit of Whiteside Hill. Its E end rests on the left bank of the Hindhope Burn, about 100 yds above the inflow of the Hare Grain; its W end likewise rests on the source of an unmarked burn which runs down past Cushat Knowe to join the Grindstone Burn. Its total length is thus about 300 yds including the gaps through which pass the tracks of two old roads. The work consists of a ditch with a bank on its N side and, in places, a spoil-bank on the S side as well; at the ends only the ditch survives, and in the centre, where it passes through a moss and has also been damaged by traffic, the whole work is almost invisible. RCAHMS 1956, visited 1945.
As described above.
