Earthworks (NR)

OS 6"map, (1962).

This linear earthwork, which consists of a bank with no positive traces of a ditch, runs W from the lip of the steep left bank of the Hindhope Burn across the neck of high ground joining Hindhope Law to Whiteside Hill.

Originally no doubt it extended as far as the head of the hollow in which the Corse Sike rises; but on the top of the neck it has been obliterated by the tracks of an old road, and a ditch which appears to continue its line towards the hollow may only be one of these. Another may have been responsible for the obliteration of a ditch on the uphill side of the bank. Though nowhere in good preservation, the bank is least damaged at its E end, being there traceable for a total length of some 60 yds over a gap made by a branch road descending to the Hindhope Burn. RCAHMS 1956, visited 1945.

The wasted remains of this linear earthwork comprise a turf bank, 3.0m - 0.4m broad and 0.3m high; about 75.0m S of this are traces of another linear earthwork. It has been of larger proportions, being 6.0m broad and 0.4m high, and contains stone in its construction. It can be traced for some 80.0m.

Visited by OS(JLD) 8 September 1960.

These linear earthworks, generally as described in the report of 8 September 1960 are similar to the "cross-ridge-dykes" found elsewhere in this area.

Visited by OS(TRG) 15 September 1976.
