It is thought by many that a large town existed at Old Jedworth (Jedward) (NT 669 143) at an early period, and the only remains are the ruins of a small chapel (NT61SE 12) and a farm or stead. Chalmers (G Chalmers 1810), states that the village and church were built by Ecgred, Bishop of Lindisfarne, who died in 845. Even before the age of David I another village of the same name (the present town of Jedburgh) with a church and castle, a few miles lower down the River Jed, had arisen and eclipsed the ancient hamlet. It is doubtful if there is any authority for holding that the hamlet is older than the burgh.

The two vills of Jedworth, the modern form of "Gedwearthe" were presumably contiguous. One lay at Jedburgh itself; the other, though identified in recent times with a farmstead four miles upstream, is more likely to have lain somewhere near the modern Bongate (NT 65 21). (See NT62SE 46.)
