This was the site of one of the ports or gates of the ancient town wall of Haddington. A local informant states that there were some remains of the town wall at this place within the last 50 years and that it is well known that there was a gate here.

Name Book 1853'

No siting symbol appears on the first edition 6". The symbol published on the 1906 edition has been centred over the name on the first edition.

Some time after the erection of the town wall in 1597, Newtown Port was resited in a location near St John's Church.
