Control Tower for airfield still in use by the Museum of Flight.

Two storey Control tower for East Fortune built by the Air Ministry before 1943. Built of brick and rendered in concrete.

The tower is situated between the runways on the W side of the airfield. The tower may have been altered during the 1960s when the airfield was used as a temporary replacement during the upgrading of Edinburgh Turnhouse Airport.

Visible on RAF WW II vertical air photographs (NLA 68, 3041-3049,4041-4049, flown 26 August 1943).

Air Ministry, circa 1940-45. 2-storey control tower block of single brick skin

rendered in concrete. Vehicle accommodation at ground, wooden sliding

door, 3 ventilation panels. Iron forestair leading to control level on W

elevation, additional stair inside. Flat concrete roof, railed, with steel framed octagonal control chamber glazed all round with multi-paned steel casements.

Notes:

The tower is located to the N of the hangars and ancillary building,

overlooking the main runways and surrounded by farmland. It is in poor

condition (1989). Listed as an essential component of the airfield complex.
