NT54NW 4 c. 526 476.
(Area centred NT 526 476). Another witness to the long distant past is "Auld Castle Rigs", situated about a quarter of a mile to the west of the centre of Lauder. Not a trace of the "Auld Castle" remains, and in the year 1612, in a conveyance by Sir John Hume of Blackader in favour of Frances Wilkenson, it was even then called "Auldcastle" or "Blindwalls", indicating that it had resembled one of those old Border keeps of which several are still standing, having slight provision for light within. "Auld Castle Rigs" were acquired by Wm. Moffat in 1691, and they are still the property of his descendant, Capt. Allan of Allanbank. This "Auld Castle" may perhaps, have been the residence of Cospatrick, father of the first Earl of Dunbar, whose chief residence south of the Lammermuirs is said to have been at Lauder, at the end of the eleventh or early in the twelfth century. (However, cf NT54NW 32)

Enquiries at Allanbank revealed no knowledge of this feature, but within the area indicated, is a patch of mutilated ground suggestive of possible building remains. Enquiries, however, revealed that the area had been recently disturbed by drainage operations, but no traces of foundations were reported. The site is, therefore, still unlocated.
