In the 16th century there were three towers in the village of Darnick (NT 53 34), one of which has completely disappeared. (See also NT53SW 11 and NT53SW 14 )

RCAHMS 1956

This may be a reference to the 'Little Peel' which is known from title deeds to have stood on the site of the present Darnick Cottage (NT 5322 3429). A Jeffrey (1864) also notes the existence of two other defended houses at the beginning of the 19 century. One stood in ruins to the east of the 1864 village school. It had strong, thick walls and nearby to the north or north-east were the remains of what appeared to be a large malt kiln. The other stood at the southern extremity of the village and contained the accommodation for stock on the ground floor and that of the humans above.
