Archaeology Notes

NT53SE 46 604 303.

See also NT53SE 147.

There was a village of St Boswells in the parish of that name; fragments of its foundations are sometimes turned up by the plough.

OPS 1851; New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845 (P Craw)

The village of St Boswells is said to have formerly stood near the church (NT63SW 23, at NT 606 305), but it has gradually and entirely disappeared.

D MacGibbon and T Ross 1896

The site of this village was not ascertained during field investigation.

Visited by OS (JLD) 21 February 1961

There is now no trace of the original village of St Boswells, the place where it stood now being cultivated. It stood near the church and extended from the high bank to the E of it to a considerable distance W of the Kelso road, beyond Temple farmstead (NT 6033 3020). Though it is stated in many gazetters that the few houses near St Boswells Green (NT 593 304) are all that remain of the village, this is a mistake; the last house stood where Maxton Cottage now stands (? Maxton House: NT 6045 3035).

Name Book 1859

The village of Lessudden, lying about a mile NW of the church, is now generally called St Boswells.
