Archaeology Notes

NT51SE 2 5866 1250 and 5864 1243.

(NT 58651250) Two circular earthwork, each surrounding a knowe, and within a few feet of each other, are situated south of the main entrance to Weens Eventide Home and about 30 yards from the road. The east knowe is reputed to be the site of the original stronghouse of Weens. Laid stones were found at a depth of 18 inches while clearing an open drain, across a small road SW of the west knowe.

Information from A T Curle, Easter Weens, Bonchester Bridge 20 January 1963; G Tancred 1907

The site of the original stronghouse on Weens is probably on the top of the bank above the garden-walk near old Weens loaning. Large foundation stones have been dug up there at different times, and the positions would have been a favourable one both as a residence and as a place of defence.

G Tancred 1907

At NT 58661250 and NT 58641243 are the two knowes to which A T Curle refers (they lie N and S, not E and W as stated). Each is surrounded by the remains of a turf-covered bank, both of which appear to be old plantation banks. No trace of a pele was seen on either of the knowes. Visited by OS (EGC) 12 April 1965
