Archaeology Notes

NT37SW 5.01 c. 3406 7254

The suggestion in the NSA that there was a fortified gatehouse at Musselburgh Old Bridge is not in fact supported by the authority quoted for it (L Eachard 1711) as this says no more than that Cromwell took Musselburgh in 1650 without much opposition. Patten's statement that the bridge was "wel warded with ordinaunce" (W Patten 1798) does not necessarily imply the existence of a gatehouse with artillery mounted on it. "Bridgend doores" are mentioned in the Town Council records of 1687, but their position and character are unknown.

NSA 1845; A Graham 1965.

The location assigned to this record is unverified, and essentially arbitrary.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 26 April 2006.
