On the east side of Cockenzie Harbour a building of rough stone construction approximately 17m x 5m was seen. The north 10m has been substantially rebuilt in brick and is now a 'Fresh Fish Centre'. The rest of the building appears to be a store.
Site recorded by GUARD during the Coastal Assessment Survey for Historic Scotland, 'The Firth of Forth from Dunbar to the Coast of Fife' 22nd February 1996.
The buildings noted above are depicted on three editions of the historical 25-inch scale Ordnance Survey maps (Haddingtonshire 1854, sheet 8), as the smithy for the Salt Works on the E side of the harbour. The modern and historical maps show two buildings at this location.
The maps also show that the Tranent to Cockenzie waggonway (NT37NE 6) ended near this point.
