Archaeology Notes

NT36SW 22.15 centred 3328 6368

The Dense Medium Plant, also known as the Drew Boy, was installed in 1963-64 to treat coals over 2in (5cm). The coal was treated in a suspension of Magnetite in water, whose specific gravity allowed the dirt to sink and the coal to float to the surface for removal.

The Dense Mediium Plant was designed by the Carlisle firm of Simonacco.

Information taken from Lady Victoria Scottish Mining Museum pamphlet dated 1991

The purpose of this RCAHMS photographic survey, undertaken during September 1999, was to record the completed new facade and entrance (which formed phase 3 of the museum development); external images of the north and west sides of the colliery surface buildings; internal views, at ground level in the surface buildings; views of the Picking Table area and views of the Medium Density Plant.

Visited by RCAHMS(MKO), September 1999.
