The Picking Tables were ranges of slow moving conveyors at which workers stood to remove lumps of stone and other unwanted materials from the coal. Women often did this job as they were prevented from working underground by an Act of 1842.
On emerging from the shaft in cages, the hutches of coal were weighed and checked. Their contents were then tipped onto a conveyor belt using a Tippler (there were originally 6).
When first built the pithead had two levels. This allowed 'simultaneous decking' (loading and unloading) of both decks of the double-deck cages. Single of consecutive decking was introduced in 1962.
