The old chapel of Heriot was under Newbattle Abbey and Gavin Douglas, famed author and poet, was reputed to have been a rector there in 1516. The bell on the church is dated 1518 (Statistical Account [OSA] 1794).

It is believed locally that the present church at NT 3903 5255 occupies the site of the old chapel but no further information could be found.
