Field Visit (July 2021)

NT 3342 3752 Work commenced on a comprehensive survey of the 18th-/19th-century burial ground at Kirklands, Leithen Road, Innerleithen (Canmore no 53167). Although constrained by Covid-19 regulations, excellent progress was made during the summer of 2021.

Work to date has included the creation of an accurate site plan showing the position of all remaining gravestones and structures lying within the perimeter wall. The survey was carried out using ‘survey-grade’ GPS and each monument has been allocated a unique reference number to facilitate further recording and analysis of data.

Currently, the surveyors are in the process of recording the details of individual gravestones and these will be complemented by a comprehensive photographic record of the monuments and other graveyard features of interest. Memorials of special historical interest will also be recorded using 3D photogrammetric modelling techniques.

As well as providing a detailed record of the graveyard, it is expected that analysis of the memorials will provide valuable insights into the life expectancy, health, and living conditions of the people of Innerleithen during the early modern period.

Further details of project available on request.

Field Visit (July 2022 - August 2022)

NT 3342 3752 Work is continuing on the survey and recording of the 18th-/19th-century burial ground at Kirklands, Leithen Road, Innerleithen (Canmore ID: 53167).

Good progress was made during the summer of 2022 and the surveyors have now recorded details for more than three-quarters of the existing monuments in the graveyard. It is hoped that the recording process will be completed early in 2023, so that the resulting data can be analysed and prepared for publication.

As well as providing a detailed record of the graveyard, it is expected that analysis of the memorials will provide valuable insights into the life expectancy, health and living conditions of the people buried in the cemetery.

Further details of project available on request.
