Archaeology Notes

NT28SW 1.09 c.2069 8051

A short visit was made to the island in late February 2010 by RCAHMS to undertake a rapid photographic survey.

The S engine room is situated immediately S of No.1 Gun emplacement (NT28SW 1.01). Built on a platform which extends out over the upper beach area it is constructed on brick and concrete. Similar to the N engine room (NT28SW 1.08). The interior was not examined.

Visited by RCAHMS (DE), AL), February 2010

Activities

Note (19 August 2013)

A Second World War engine house, almost identical the building in the N of the island (see NT28SW 1.08) is located next to the shore line to the S of the Second World War gun emplacement. It may have replaced a First World War engine house which was built in the same location.

A plan of the new arrangement for the battery shows the engine house on a slightly different alignment in 1916 (The National Achives WO 78/5163). However the plan does not seem to have been followed in relation to the position of the engine house.

An air photograph within an album held by the National Museum of Scotland (Museum of Flight) shows the island after rebuilding in about 1916 or early 1917. The engine house appears to be in the same location as the Second World War engine house.

In a plan of 1915 (The National Archives WO78/4417) an engine house is shown lying to the E of 1916 engine house at NT 20692 80519.

Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 19 August 2013.

Project (March 2013 - September 2013)

A project to characterise the quantity and quality of the Scottish resource of known surviving remains of the First World War. Carried out in partnership between Historic Scotland and RCAHMS.
