World War One Audit of Surviving Remains (19 August 2013)

This searchlight battery is situated on the NE and NW part of the island. Numbered six to ten on a War Office plan they are associated with the Second World War No.2 gun but a plan of 1916 shows proposed positions for four light emplacements, and some may therefore be of First World War date. The emplacements are for two types of searchlights. One type allows the searchlight to be traversed to follow a target; the other kind projects fixed beams into an area on which the guns were already pre-targeted.

For First World War searchlights see NT28SW 1.11.

Information from HS/RCAHMS World War One Audit Project (GJB) 19 August 2013

Archaeology Notes

NT28SW 1.07 centred 2063 8062

A short visit was made to the island in late February 2010 by RCAHMS to undertake a rapid photographic survey.

This searchlight battery is situated on the NE and NW part of the island. Numbered six to ten on a War Office plan they are associated with No.2 gun.

The emplacements are surrounded by other buildings, many of which are only visible as foundations and concrete platforms.

Visited by RCAHMS (DE, AL), February 2010
