Activities

Project (1997)

The Public Monuments and Sculpture Association (http://www.pmsa.org.uk/) set up a National Recording Project in 1997 with the aim of making a survey of public monuments and sculpture in Britain ranging from medieval monuments to the most contemporary works. Information from the Edinburgh project was added to the RCAHMS database in October 2010 and again in 2012.

The PMSA (Public Monuments and Sculpture Association) Edinburgh Sculpture Project has been supported by Eastern Photocolour, Edinburgh College of Art, the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust, Historic Scotland, the Hope Scott Trust, The Old Edinburgh Club, the Pilgrim Trust, the RCAHMS, and the Scottish Archive Network.

Field Visit (1 August 2002)

Ornate wrought iron gates with crested overthrow. Both pillars are surmounted by a crown decorated with roses. Each gate has scrolls and the letter F near the foot. Coat of arms of Fettes (painted red, white and blue) in centre of overthrow: shield decorated with two mullets (top), a chevron (centre) and a cross crosslet fitchee (bottom); a helmet above surmounted by a bee; and a lion rampant (dexter) and a stag rampant (sinister).

John Rhind carved the gate pillars; Alexander Sinclair made the ornamental gates. The Fettes Trust Ledger of 1872-80 records a first instalment of £45 paid to John Rhind for carving gate pillars at Centre Approach (26 September 1874), and the balance of £33.12/- (5 May 1875); and a first instalment of £100 paid to Alexander Sinclair for ornamental gate at Centre Approach (2 December 1874), and the balance of £71.5/- (15 February 1875).
