This structure was built during the late 1960's recoconstruction of the Leith Docks system (NT27NE 57.00) to seal off the Western Harbour (NT27NE 57.10) from the sea and so allow its water level to be controlled. It joins the Western Breakwater (NT27NE 57.07) to the New Entrance Lock (NT27NE 57.03).
