Archaeology Notes

NT22NE 2 269 286.

(Area centred)NT 269 286 Indeterminate Remains, Bught Rig, 1. A roughly rectangular setting of eight stones known as the "Douglas Stones" (C G Cash 1913), is situated at a height of about 1300ft OD on Bught Rig, one mile NW. of Blackhouse farmhouse. The position is a marshy hollow, in which the Risp Sike runs E. to join the Brakehope Burn.

Although all the stones are set on end, only three of them are earthfast; the largest is 2ft. 2 in. high and measures 3ft. by 2ft. at the base, while the smallest is only 7 in. high.

The stones do not appear to belong to a pre-historic structure, and were probably connected with the farm or croft the former presence of which is indicated by the cleared grassy areas and by other quarried stones that are to be seen in the immediate vicinity.
