The construction of this bridge was completed in latter part of 1897, the first train crossing it on 20 August and the official opening being on 29 September. It was a steel bowstring of 100ft (30.5m) span, substantial abutments being of granite from Della Cassa in Italy, delivered cut and dressed to the site.
