Archaeology Notes

NT08SW 91 0169 8075

For Roman temporary camp around the location of this souterrain, see NT08SW 12.

The cropmark of a possible souterrain has been identified from aerial photography 310m ESE of Drum farmsteading. It is intersected by the N side of Muirhouses Roman Camp (NT08SW 12) and was initially interpreted as a ring-ditch. Recent aerial photography (RCAHMSAP 1996) has led to the re-interpretation of the cropmarks as a possible souterrain as the ditch appears to be C-shaped in plan as opposed to a complete circle and tapers towards either end, both morphological traits of souterrains.

Further cropmarks in the immediate area include an enclosure (NT08SW 89) and traces of mining activity (NT08SW 24 and NT08SW 108).
