A two-week excavation to the W of the Roman fort at Carriden (NT08SW 7) revealed a medieval road running W to E along the S side of the excavation. Bordering it was a drainage ditch with a stone revetted earth dyke alongside that. The dyke may have been part of a building. 13th-century pottery shows that this was part of the early village of Carriden. The dyke was partly replaced by a dry-stone wall sometime around the 16th century. The whole landscape was remodelled in the 18th century when it was emparked.
