Archaeology Notes

NT07NE 16.00 07404 78589 Midhope Bridge

NT07NE 16.01 0740 7858 Cross-slabs

Built into the parapet of a small bridge close to the entrance gate at Midhope Castle are two sculptured stones ornamented with a foliated scroll-work of similar type to the Abercorn stones (NT07NE 1). Only one sculptured face is visible, but there is reason to believe that both slabs bear sculptured designs in relief on their under surfaces. One slab, on the S parapet of the bridge, is 6' in length, 10" broad and 9" thick. The other, in the N parapet close to the entrance gate, is 4' 2 1/2" long by 10" broad and 9" thick.

RCAHMS 1929, visited 1926

This bridge was destroyed about four years ago. The sculptured stones were probably shattered and are now lost.

Visited by OS (JP) 27 March 1974

There two stones form part of the same 8th century Anglian cross, which must originally have stood 14ft high. They were removed from the bridge in 1934 and are now in Abercorn church (see NT07NE 1).
