(NS 9819 8677) Monk's Well (NR)

OS 6"map, (1967)

Monk's Well, on Ashes farm, provided the water supply for Culross Abbey.

D Beveridge 1885; H Scott (Fasti Eccles Scot) 1915-61.

A large stone covering this well is inscribed "1667 Rebuilt 1893", but traces of the original date (1667) are still visible on the stone. The circular shaft, approximately 2.0m in diameter and 3.0m deep, is modern except for a short length near the bottom which appears to be of considerable age.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (M H) 10 July 1953.

An archaeological assessment and watching brief were undertaken along the route of the Longannet pipeline in May 1996. The desk-based assessment confirmed a series of sites within a 400m wide corridor, including:
