Archaeology Notes

NS97SE 91 978 744

27.5m short of the E end of fort NS97SE 1 lie three possible rectangular house sites: 15m by 7.5m, 10m by 6m and 15m by 5m, with a possible yard 20m by 15m, on the S, bounded by the south scarp of the hill. Two of the possible house sites are cut into the bank of the fort.

C J Aliaga-Kelly 1985.

Further to the three possible rectangular house sites noted in 1985, examination revealed at least four other rectangular house sites on the N scarp edge of the upper enclosure, W of those already noted. These survive as sub-rectangular turf and stone banks with internal hollows: that on the w side of those already noted is 5m by 3.5m internally, that 5.5m further W is 5.2m by 2.5m and that abutting it is 7.4m by 2.5m wide. Immediately W of these are some indistinct hollows cut into the scarp, which abut the fourth structure which had rounded ends and seemed to hav been subdivided internally. This was around 8m long by 2.2m wide, internally, surviving as a slight hollow with less distinctive wall foundation remains.

C J Kelly 1991.

Examination in 1992 revealed an eighth rectangular hollow cut into the NW corner of the upper enclosure, on the S side of the seventh of those which have already been noted. It was 2m wide by 6m long, aligned ENE to WSW like the others.

Immediately S of this was a series of four slight terraces, around 23m EW by 10m, 3m, 6.3m and 2.3m respectively, NS.

C A[liaga-] Kelly 1992.
