This small basin, probably a winding basin, on the S side of the canal a short distance W of Bridge 54 (NS97NW 61.02), is clearly shown on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Stirlingshire 1865, sheet XXXI), on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Stirlingshire 1899, sheet XXXInw), on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1990) and on the OS basic Scale digital map (2000).

Watching Brief (1 April 2014 - 3 April 2014)
An archaeological watching brief was carried out at three canoe access/egress points along the Union Canal located at Broxburn (NT 0776 7233) Bridge 51 (NS 9571 7671) and Polmont (NS 9304 7798). A section of the canal wall was exposed at Broxburn- no other features of archaeological interest were uncovered.
