Archaeology Notes

NS97NW 13 c. 948 794

For Roman Temporary Camp at NS 9472 7897, see NS97NW 11.

(Area: NS 948 794). The existence of an Antonine Wall fort on the West side of the Avon, most probably at Polmonthill Farm, is suggested by Ann Robertson on the basis that it would have been advisable to guard the crossing by having a fort on the opposite side of the river from the Inveravon fortlet. She compares the situation with Balmuildy, where she postulates the existence of the fortlet at Summerston to complement the fort on the otherside of the Kelvin river.

A Robertson 1974.

The area around Polmonthill (formerly Polmonthill Farm) is now a golf course and the summit of the hill to the west is occupied by a very large covered reservoir. No evidence has yet been found to confirm or deny Robertson's hypothesis.

Visited by OS (MJF), 23 March 1980.
