Architecture Notes

Distances on the Union Canal are marked not only at every mile but often at half-mile intervals; a typical milestone being a dressed stone pillar up to 2ft 9in high above an undressed base, square in section and measuring 10in a side. The stones are set with one arris towards the Canal, the distances to Camelon and Edinburgh being incised on the adjacent faces. The one by the W end of the Avon Aqueduct (NS97NE 60) is thus marked 71/2 and 24. Beside this milestone stands a large pillar, marking the division between two stages; this stands 3ft 6in high above its base, measures 13in by 10 1/2in in section and is inscribed DIVISION/ BETWIXT/ THIRD AND/ FOURTH STAGES.

This milestone, a short distance to the W of the Avon Aqueduct (NS97NE 60), is marked 7 (to Falkirk) and 24 (to Edinburgh). Both faces of the stone can be easily read from the canal as the pointed side faces the waterway.

H Brown 1997.

This milestone on the N bank of the canal, just W of the Avon Aqueduct 9NS97NE 60) is clearly marked on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Stirlingshire 1865, sheet XXXI) and shows Port Downie seven and a half and Port Hopetoun twenty four. The milestone is also marked on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1989) and on the OS Basic Scale digital map (2000).

Information from RCAHMS (MD) 17 April 2001.
