This railway was constructed from Slammannan near Airdrie as far as the basin (NS97NE 62.03) in 1840.

The evidence of this former railway crossing is visible in the shape of abutments on each bank of the canal, just to the SE of the Slamannan Basin (NS97NE 62.03).

This bridge, carrying the Slamannan and Borrowstounness Railway over the canal, is shown on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Stirlingshire 1865, sheet XXXI) and on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Stirlingshire 1899, sheet XXXISW). The dismantled railway is visible on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1989) and on the OS Basic Scale digital map (2000).
