Situated amongst a group of buildings which includes the guardroom and museum (NS94SW 57.05), Unit Fire Station and workshops is the gymnasium and stores building. Built of red brick and concrete, the two storey building is in two parts. The block to the S is a store/warehouse with pantiled pitched roof, four glazed timber doors in the S elevation and a concrete platt with concrete canopy.
The gynanasium is a flat roofed two storey extension with single story square flat roofed block at the W end.
The structure was built between 1936 and 1939 as part of the barracks complex.
Internally, the entrance area has in situ parquet flooring and the main hall retains wall bars and other gym equipment. The wooden sprung floor has been removed or cut up and only the E end office retains a floor. At second floor level on the N side is a gallery accessed by a 1930's art-deco style staircase.
Immediately to the W of the gymnasium block is a small brick built electricity sub-station is the same style as the barracks and an oil storage tank mounted on a brick base.
