Archaeological Evaluation (14 April 2017 - 17 April 2017)
NS 87962 42626 An excavation was undertaken, 14–17 April 2017, at No 1 Double Row. This formed part of a regeneration scheme which included a public engagement programme involving volunteers in archaeological investigation. The entire basement was stripped, mapped and sampled, and four small trenches, covering a total of 4.55m2, were excavated.
A number of features were recorded, including a large concrete area, which possibly related to the basement’s use as a wash house, a small arc of cobbles and flag stones from a later phase of occupation, the possible base of a range, and various repairs to an interior wall incorporating a fireplace.
