Archaeology Notes

NS69SE 13 6508 9004.

NS 651 900. An enclosure is situated 200 yds W of the Spout of Ballochleam. D-shaped on plan, it lies on a shelf at the foot of a sheer rock-face 80' high, and is formed by an arc of ruinous wall which springs from the base of the rock. The wall is about 3' in thickness, constructed loosely of boulders, and encloses an uneven, grass-covered area measuring 80' WNW-ESE by 45' transversely. There is a 3' wide gap in the W arc which probably represents an entrance. The date and purpose of this structure, which is comparable with NS89NW 23, is unknown. Immediately WNW, a sub-rectangular area 140' x 60' has been cleared of boulders, but it has never, apparently, been surrounded by a wall. RCAHMS 1963, visited 1958

NS 6508 9004. This enclosure is as described by the RCAHMS. It has the appearance of a stock enclosure of no great age.
