(NS 6705 0003) Whigs Hole (NR).

OS 6" map (1958)

Whig's Hole is a large hole scooped out near the top of Altry Hill, capable of holding a hundred men, and was much used as a hiding place by the Whigs or Cameronians during the persecution. It was so deep that anyone standing in it could not be seen from a distance, while having a good view of the approaches.

Name Book 1850; J Barbour 1897; NSA 1845 (G Paterson); J H Thomson 1891

Whig's Hole, name verified, is an entirely natural feature comprising a turf-covered band of bed-rock protruding from an otherwise uniformly steep, pastured slope.
