Archaeology Notes

NS57SW 22.01 5089 7101 to 5097 7149

NS 5089 7101 to NS 5097 7149 Archaeological trial trenching in September 1997 close to the site of Knappers (NMRS NS57SW 22), a Neolithic and Early Bronze Age cemetery excavated in the 1930s, revealed traces of prehistoric activity possibly related to the cemetery. A single sherd of beaker pottery was recovered from a small pit. Other pits were present, one of which was densely packed with charcoal. A few isolated post- and stake-holes and a curving, shallow trench, possibly the slot trench of a structure, were present. Palaeobotanical samples were taken from the area of Cleddans Burn for pollen analysis.
