Archaeology Notes

NS57NE 51 5571 7969

There is a well dedicated to St Kessog or Mackessog at Netherton (shown on OS 1st edition map, but now built over, the area being named Blanefield). It is mentioned in a description of the lands of Cult in 1570. 'This old well is just on the march between Cult Craig and Wester Leddiegreen, about two hundred yards north of the public road, at the west side of the Crosshill.' (The unnamed well shown on OS 1st edition map at NS 5571 7969, c. 100m N of the road, may be the well referred to by Smith.) It is uncertain whether there was a chapel associated with this well.

OS 6" map, Stirlingshire, 1st ed. (1865), sheet xxvii; J G Smith 1886;

J M Mackinlay 1914.
