(Name: NS 5786 6175) Site of the Battle of Langside (NR) 13th May 1568 OS 1:1250 map, (1973)

The Battle of Langside was fought on the 13th May 1568 between the Regent Murray, commanding an army of over 4000 men, and a force of Mary Queen of Scots. The former occupied a position on top of Langside Hill, where they were attacked by the Queen's forces advancing from Rutherglen. After a battle, lasting some 3/4 hour, the latter were routed. This defeat led to the Queen's flight to England.

F H Groome 1901; L M Mann 1918.

A monument to the battle surmounts Langside Hill (NS 5787 6171). Some cannon balls and bullets found in the area are in Camphill Museum, Queen's Park.
